It is not only the strays that are poisoned... poison being deliberately put down
where household PETS are kept.

Cats, kittens, dogs, puppies frothing at the mouth die an awful, slow, painful death.
Dogs tied to trees without food or water, on chains too short for them
to lay down to sleep, too short for them to excrete elsewhere and
often times the chain is a wire that becomes embedded in their neck
as the puppy grows.

The Arche Noah Kreta's poster campaign shows exactly what the animal welfare supporters are up against on the island of Crete and when they travel to Athens.
These are examples of some of the 'less' disturbing photos, on their website, of how a dog can suffer, there are stories of just how the animal welfare supporters can also suffer in the hands of Greek civilians pretending to be officals and police officers. You can help support this worthy group of people still fighting strong for animal rights.
The poison has been put down for the usual pre-summer tourist culling of the local strays, one story out of many was of a man in Elounda who lost his two beloved pet dogs when poison was put down for them. Two other pet dogs living nearby suffered from poison being put down around their home where they play. Luckily the second two dogs were rushed to a vet in Irapetra and were saved in time. After emergency treatment and a week of medication, they seem to have made a full recovery. Luckily these two pet dogs had owners with a fast car.

Death by poison is protracted and cruel. Animals poisoned with poison
scream, vomit, defecate and suffer violent seizures
They die with a final seizure up to 12 hours after ingestion of the poison.
The late Dr Peter Rawlinson, Conservationist and Lecturer in Zoology at La Trobe University, Melbourne said of this poison:
''Animals can take up to four days to die from it...
Others go out of control after they have ingested it
they tear around banging into trees.
It is impossible to say the animal is not suffering.''
