Lake Kournas Crete ~ in the region of Chania
...and the west of Crete offers you the best holiday on Crete
with its superb and natural beaches, clean, friendly with natural sand
once a very popular destination for tourists, tourism has died out in recent years, leaving the beaches almost deserted, the food you will be cooked in the local tavernas is the best food on Crete with very inexpensive prices. The lack of tourism here allows you to pass a restaurant or taverna without being 'enticed' in by the 'doorman'.
Chania is a very romantic region where you can get a flight to Chania airport, hire a car then find your own inexpensive accommodation, or sleep under the Cretan stars for the night! There are many beaches on the south of the coast where people take their tents and to preserve the beauty of the area and beaches, they take care to remove ALL their rubbish regularly. Other beaches do not escape the disgusting shredded RUBBISH from washing up onto the shores! Common in summer in east Crete!

Head west where the beaches are best!
Take nothing but photos... leave nothing but footprints!
The beaches on the east of Crete are either stony, man-made of grit from the mountains and
topped with some sand from the ocean bed, there are a lot of beaches that in high season,
benefit from shredded black bin bags and the rubbish that was once in them, washing up
onto the beach! click here for one such beach! (at bottom of page)
I personally found this region of Crete more tolerant to the huge numbers of strays, cats
and dogs. The conditions of animals on Crete are abysmal, click here to read further information about animal
welfare on Crete. The huge amount of animal welfare charity volunteers reflect the need to help these wretched animals.

Fantastic tavernas to be found west Crete!
serving food as only Cretans can, this taverna in south Crete offered a so warm welcome, extremely inexpensively piled so much food onto our plates, even with Skilaki helping us, we couldn't possibly finish it all! Read about Skilaki as he tours Crete!
